Tips to Help You Protect Your Colour-Treated Hair

A lot of women love the idea of colouring their hair, it can be so exciting. However, a lot fewer women know that caring for coloured hair requires a little creativity. Many women fail to keep their colour-treated hair look shiny and vibrant, and many complain about the product they used for colour treatment. So, before we get deeper into the topic, have your stylist use only quality, conditioning hair colours. The problem starts when you start using low-quality hair products. So, ensure that you only invest in quality products because we are talking about your hair – an entity that resembles femininity, freedom, and beauty.

In this post, we will discuss a few tips on how to maintain your colour-treated hair.

1. After colouring, wait at least 72 hours before you shampoo

When the dye is applied on your hair, your hair cuticle layer opens up, making it easy for the colour to infiltrate the hair shaft. Soon after colouring your hair when you shampoo it, there is possibility of the cuticle layer still be opened, leading to the colour washing down the drain. It will take around 72 hours (3 days) for the hair cuticle layer to completely close. The longer you wait, the colour pigment will have more time to soak into the hair cuticle that will help your hair colour last longer.

2. Invest in shampoos and conditioners that are sulphate-free

Sodium Laureth Ether sulphate also referred to as Sodium Laureth Sulphate, is an anionic detergent found in many personal care products. Sulphate it primarily used as a foaming-producing agent in shampoos and conditioners. However, sulphate can strip your hair of its moisture and natural oils that ultimately results in decolouration of your beautifully colour-treated hair. Sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners are recommended especially if you dye your hair. It will keep your hair colour from fading. Always invest in quality hair product. So whether you have straight, curly, thin, or even frizzy hair, there is a sulphate-free hair product option available for all.

3. Add dye to your conditioner

If you are rocking a brighter hair shade, say blue, purple, or even pink, try adding some of your dye into the conditioner. It will help re-dye your hair every time you wash your hair and will keep your hair look fresh until the roots grow out.

4. Ensure that the water temperature is down when shampooing

Taking hot showers could open up your cuticle layer, allowing the hair colour to wash out while washing and conditioning your hair. Hence, you are advised to turn down the water temperature when shampooing in order to avoid all your colour go down the drain. When warm water hits your scalp, your scalp becomes softer, allowing the water to penetrate and cleanse easily. Cold water, on the other hand, helps seal the moisture from your conditioner and prevent the colour from fading away.

5. Wash your colour-treated hair less often

It may sound bizarre and unhygienic, but if you want to your hair colour to last longer, you must wash your hair less often. Rinsing your hair daily will not only flush out the natural oils in your hair but also the colour as well. Washing your hair less often will allow the natural oils to flourish in your scalp resulting in healthy hair and will also ensure to keep your hair colour look fresh. You can wash your hair 2-3 times a week to maintain the vibrant and clean look of your hair dye.

6. Leave-in treatments for protecting your hair colour when styling

Hydration is what required for a chemically treated hair to remain fluent and dense. Leave-in treatments are the best way to hydrate and protect your hair from the sun. You are advised to use one with UV protection to prevent damage, loss of hair colour, and loss of nutrients to the hair.

7. Nourish your hair with protein

Protein damage is the one side effect that your hair may experience after colouring. You know your hair requires protein treatment when it starts stretching and snapping off. Try to look for protein-rich hair products like shampoo and conditioner. Or you can simply make a protein mask at home using eggs and mayonnaise. Mix one whole egg in two tbsp mayonnaise and apply the mixture on the roots as well as tips. Wait for 45 minutes before washing it off with a good-quality shampoo.

8. Oil your hair

Regular oiling is must to keep your hair colour intact for a prolonged period. It will not only help enhance the colour shade but will also keep your hair stronger and shinier.

With proper care, you can keep your colour-treated hair natural and vibrant. Always prefer professional help when colouring your hair. An expert might help you with choosing the right hair product and lay out some tips on how to maintain them.
