Is Your Living Room Incomplete?
We tackle the missing Links
Is interior design really that intimidating?
We find that a lot of our readers who have a wonderful eye for design, struggle with aesthetic and interior design. Whether it’s color matching and blending hues or figuring out proper lighting for a space, there is something about decorating a blank space.
In fact, it can be more daunting filling out the canvas for a blank room versus touching up an existing design.
When designing the interior décor of a room there are a lot of things to consider that will create the “lived in” magazine worthy look that we all swoon over.
How many times do we look online at design blogs to see picturesque living spaces and wonder why we can’t replicate a similar look for our regular lives?
You don’t have to be an award-winning interior designer to realize a charming space that you and your guests will enjoy for many seasons to come. Avoid putting together a space that looks awkward, empty in some spots, or as if “something is missing”.
We take a look at the same design practices the experts use when decking out a living room space.
1. A Focal Point
Ah, a focal point.
What the heck is a focal point anyways? What qualifies as a focal point at least?
A focal point captures your attention and serves as the centerpiece that everything in the room gravitates towards.
A focal point could be a flat screen tv on a beautiful mantel, a fireplace, or large window, or even a grand couch or armoire. A luxurious sofa or chaise lounge with contrasting accent pillows could work as a focal point too.
2. Nature
A living room space should be just that. A space for the living that consists of living and breathing entities. We forget that a simple plant or any sort of live greenery can totally bring a room to life.
Organic and natural woods like mahogany and oak are also ways to bring life into a room.
Flowers and plants bring a natural element to the room that will undoubtedly improve daily mood and indoor air quality.
3. Adequate Seating
Make sure you have enough seating in your living room space.
Furniture is obviously important, so you want to ensure that in addition to the tables, lighting, and the typical couch you have enough seating.
Think about a beautiful lounge that can be used in lieu of the standard couch for a lounge elevates the room with its more sophisticated look.
Consider creating seating zones to also make a large room appear smaller, or a small room more refined. You can design a seating zone by creating compartments and boundaries with your furniture.
4. Something Personal
Personality is the basis for style.
Add personal photographs or framed memorabilia that means something to you.
If you are a sports fan, consider something sports themed and if you are a big traveler, think about ways to incorporate trinkets you’ve picked up to your home.
5. Art
Art is personal, and art is subjective.
We aren’t art connoisseurs, but we live by the rule that if the piece resonates within your soul, buy it.
You can’t replace the feeling of how or when art moves you, nor can you measure the impact that great art brings to a room.
Art is a must to make a room complete.
6. Area Rug
A rug is often forgotten but we consider it to be the one design element that can singlehandedly have the most impact on a room, the fastest.
A properly sized rug can be the difference that makes a room go from okay to great. Area rugs come in many different styles and designs that will surely please all tastes, while bringing a room together with color and panache.
