The Importance of Water Tank Maintenance
Several homeowners store their water in water tanks. Depend on the preference of the homeowners, these may be underground water tanks or above – ground water tanks. But why should homeowners take care of their tanks?
Build – up of sediment in water
Typically, heavy objects tend to sink to the bottom of water. In the case of water collected in a water tank, the heavy particles that may be contained tend to sink to the bottom of the tank. These particles may be collected in the water you source from the tank generally leading to the consumption of dirty water. This polluted water may also be used to wash the dishes in which case it would beat the purpose of cleaning the dishes in the first place. This is one reason that you should aspire to keep your tank clean and conduct regular maintenance.
Growth of bacteria in water
Another reason why you should aspire to keep your water tank in mint condition is the proliferation of bacteria. As mentioned before, materials in the water form some sedimentation that settles at the bottom of the tank. This sediment area is ideal for the formation of bacteria. One way to deal with this bacteria is through chemical cleaning such as the use of chlorine, which reacts with the water to kill off the bacteria. However, the sediment may form some form of coating over the bacteria enabling the bacteria to grow. This may be harmful to you as you may consume the bacteria leading to the contraction of water-borne diseases.
Loss of water
Aside from the consumption of harmful water, another reason why you should strive to take care of your water tank is the potential loss of water that may occur through damage. Water tanks are generally sturdy, but your tank may suffer some exterior damage that may leave it punctured and leaking. This is more prevalent in above – ground water tanks than underground water tanks since they are exposed to the elements. When exposed to storms, they are bombarded with all forms of debris which may damage the tank. It is essential for you to examine your tank and ensure there are no punctures. Any holes in the water tank may be repaired with special filling.
The same goes for the piping as well as any other water tank – related accessories. Any holes in the pipes may lead to the loss of water as well as the loss of water pressure necessary for the pumping of water into the house. Any accessories that seemed damaged should be replaced immediately, and the piping should be tight fits to maintain pressure within the system.
You should periodically check your tank to make sure it is structurally sound. Excessive loss of water may force you to purchase water on top of having to pay for the restoration of your tank. Maintenance of your water tank goes just beyond making sure your tank is functioning correctly. You should also strive to clean your tank periodically as well to avoid the contraction of diseases.
